Roof repair is not a difficult task. If heights do not bother you, you have basic to average carpentry skills, the tools and time, many times you can repair it yourself and save money. From inside the house, access the attic space. Enter the attic and carefully inspect the decking and roof joists from underneath with a flashlight. Look for any potential soft spots in the corresponding area where you have spotted the roof damage from the outside.Use the heel of your hand and apply firm pressure to test any areas of the decking that looks weakened. Remember, the roof must support you while you repair it; so, broken, rotten or aged decking is a potential safety hazard for you. If the underside of the roof decking is solid from the underside, procede to Step 2. If the decking is deteriorated, weakened or broken, call a roofing contractor.Set your ladder against the edge of the roof nearest the identified damaged area. Do this to limit walking on the roof excessively and damaging other shingles.
Gather your tools and climb onto the roof at the damaged area.Carefully examine the shingle damage. Check the felt underneath as well. If the felt is too damaged to nail back into place, use the utility knife to cut it away and replace it. Be sure to overlap the existing felt and nail it down straight. Use the claw hammer to remove the damaged shingle material. Do not leave it in place and simple nail down new shingles on top of it.This can cause unevenness and humps in the roof surface and create a path for further water damage and leaks. Also, do not leave parts of shingles in place. Remove the entire shingle(s) and nails so you have a clean, flat section of the roof decking cleared for the replacement shingles.Correctly count the number of shingles needed to fill in the removed and damaged ones. Retrieve the replacement shingles. Take note and special care to align and interweave the replacement shingles to the existing ones exactly or as close as possible. Before nailing down the replacement shingles, look closely for any gaps, exposed felt or other irregularities installing the new shingles may have caused.
Use the Blackjack or shingle sealant to cover any newly created potential leaks. Be sure to hide and blend in these areas with the other overlapping shingle borders by first applying a bead of the shingle sealant over the hole or crack and firmly pressing the replacement shingle down into it.Nail the shingles into place, but do not drive the roofing nails into the holes left when you removed the damaged shingles. Try to avoid the old holes. Set your roofing nail a half inch in any available direction that still lets you catch a sufficient border of the replacement shingle. Before leaving the roof, step back and examine the repair. Look for evenness and full overlapping coverage of the targeted repair area. Correct or adjust as needed. Collect your tools and exit the roof using the shortest route.
